Stephen Austin, PhD

Founder & Principal Historian

Stephen Austin is a historian and cultural resource specialist with advanced training in environmental and political history and extensive professional experience in cultural resource management across the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West. His work spans architectural history, historical research, and regulatory compliance, with a focus on producing clear, well-supported documentation for complex projects.

He holds a PhD in History from the University of Idaho, where his research examines the relationship between state formation, environmental policy, and predator management in the American West. His academic work informs a broader approach to applied history — one that integrates archival research, policy context, and institutional analysis.

Professional Practice

In professional practice, Austin has contributed to hundreds of cultural resource investigations, including historic property inventories, Section 106 compliance, and technical reporting for public and private sector clients. His work is grounded in federal and state regulatory frameworks while maintaining a high standard of historical interpretation and analytical clarity.

Through Historical Research Systems, he brings a systems-oriented perspective to consulting — bridging the gap between academic scholarship and real-world decision-making.
