At the intersection of scholarship and applied practice.
Founder & Principal Historian
Stephen Austin is a historian and cultural resource specialist with expertise in environmental and political history and more than a decade of experience in cultural resource management across the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West. He meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards in History and Architectural History.
His work spans architectural history, historical research, and regulatory compliance, with a focus on producing clear, defensible documentation for complex projects. He has contributed to more than 600 cultural resource investigations for public and private sector clients — including historic property inventories, Section 106 compliance, institutional and policy analysis, and technical reporting.
Austin holds a PhD in History from the University of Idaho. His research focuses on the American West, environmental history, and the relationship between historical analysis and contemporary policy and institutional frameworks. This background informs a broader approach to applied history—integrating archival research, regulatory context, and systems-level analysis.
He also has training and field experience in archaeology and works regularly in interdisciplinary settings involving both archaeological and built environment resources.
Austin’s work increasingly extends into advisory and policy contexts — including regulatory strategy for complex federal permitting environments, historical analysis in support of legal professionals, and the development of AI-assisted tools for document processing and research workflow automation.
